Another thrifty makeover from Plasti-kote
20/11/2008
When economies are called for but the creative amongst us still want to get that decorative 'fix', turn to Plasti-kote spray paint
If 'eating in' is the new 'going out', then you will want to do it in style. Embracing the theme of new austerity, Plasti-kote has come up with another idea on how to get a new look for a dining room on a budget. By recycling outdated accessories rather than buying new, you can achieve a stylish room makeover and professional finish for less than £80 with some cans of Plasti-kote spray paint. If you don't have enough tatty stuff of your own try the local dump, charity shops, jumble sales or even your friends' house as a great source of unloved and unwanted items just waiting to be given a new lease of life.
The beauty of using Plasti-kote spray paint is that you get the perfect, drip-free finish fast. By applying several fine layers of spray paint, you get a professional looking finish, which is touch dry in a matter of minutes.
To achieve this chic country look in less than a day we:
- Sprayed six old and various shape dining chairs, plus the table legs and a side table in
Plasti-kote Super Grey Beige for a new co-ordinated look. Four cans of Plasti-kote White Primer on the wood and 6 cans of Grey Beige covered all these items.
- The table mats had definitely seen better days and were headed for the bin before we sprayed them with Plasti-kote chalk board paint, making unique place and name mats in one. As the dinner party progresses, leave some chalk on the table for games of hangman or pictionary. These mats are a hit with the kids too.
- Doilies sprayed with Plasti-kote Super Matt Black make for stunning but disposable centre pieces. We used the same paint on an old candelabra and as the background for the quick and easy canvass. The left over Super Grey Beige was used to created a definition line and hey presto a bold art statement in less than 10 minutes! The plastic flower pots that the plants came in were emptied, sprayed with Super Matt Black and then re-potted.

- Vases from large retailers can be bought for not much more that £1. The table vases shown had been white but lacked impact. The larger vase had been an uninspiring pink and was ages old but with the help of some Plasti-kote Super Black Gloss spray paint they no longer blend in to the background. The plastic fruit platter was left over from Christmas and had been gold but a quick spray with same Super Black Gloss completed the full two colour theme.
Plasti-kote Super spray paint comes in over 60 different colours and retails for £5.99 for a 400ml can as does Plasti-kote Primer and Chalkboard paint. All are available from leading DIY and craft stores. For more information, visit www.plasti-kote.com or call 01223 836400 for stockists.
